Tyco Observatory, Griffith Observatory
Los Angeles, California

Tycho Brahe, who lived from 1546 until 1601, was a Danish nobleman best know today as an early astronomer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tycho_Brahe). He is credited with the most accurate astronomical observations of his time. The data he obtained were used by his assistant Kepler to derive the laws of planetary motion.

The Observatory he built is one of the the first known observatories in the western world, and it is depicted in the image shown here, an image provided to us for the production for a model for a Pepper's Ghost. We recreated the measuring arch using our laser, and produced an arch complete with markings out of acrylic, ready to be backlit with LEDs to add some visibility to the most important part of the scene. We used 3D studio to produce the furniture, and Poser to produce some characters to allow us to test the size of the set, which were later replaced by actors displayed on several screens to produce the Pepper's ghost effect. The stairs were produced using our laser, and then veneered with wood to give it the right texture. Candles were printed out of ABS plastic using our 3D printer, and then fitted with fiber-optic candles fed with light from a tinted flickering LED to produce the candle effect.

The star effect in the measuring window was produced using our laser to produce a black mask with an LED behind an opaque piece of acrylic in front of it. The floor is made of laser-cut real wood.
