DESIGN

Design that supports
the creative vision.

We work with clients, architects, designers and exhibit houses to turn ideas into experiences and systems people can see, hear and use. Our design work connects interactions, sound, media and physical elements with the engineering that makes them work.

FROM IDEA TO DETAIL

A design team that can make it work.

Define the experience

What should people understand, feel and be able to do? We work with your team to turn that intention into a design brief covering the audience, interactions, physical setting and practical constraints.

Start with the brief ↗

Make the idea tangible

Layouts, interfaces, models and prototypes let the team examine how a design will behave. Software, sound, controls and physical elements can be developed together, with the detail tested before it is repeated across an installation.

Engineering and programming ↗

Carry it into use

Detailed design connects materials, equipment, software and installation requirements. Access for maintenance, operator controls and future changes belong in the design alongside the opening experience.

Integration and commissioning ↗

DESIGN IN PRACTICE

Different questions. Different design answers.

A mobile exhibition about early learning

For the Museum of Teaching and Learning, Mad developed the mobile Your Baby’s Amazing Brain exhibition. Physical exhibits and interactions bring early brain development into a space designed to travel.

An interaction with a world of detail

At Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, Mad’s work included gigapixel photography, graphics and interactive programming for eleven stations around the Hogwarts Castle Model.

Physical exhibits with a complete language experience

At the Albert Robles Center, Mad’s work included digital and physical exhibits. The center can switch all its text between English and Spanish within seconds.

The agreed scope determines the deliverables. These can include concept and interaction development, schematic and detailed design, 3D visualization, acoustic and audio system planning, software interface definitions, equipment schedules, prototypes and installation coordination.

Design questionPossible output
What should the visitor experience?Experience requirements, interaction sequences and a prototype of the critical behavior.
How do the physical and digital parts meet?Interface layouts, control behavior, enclosure and mounting requirements, and coordination drawings.
What must the room support?Audio coverage and acoustic requirements, power and network provisions, equipment placement and service access.
How will the team know it works?Design intent and acceptance criteria that can guide development, commissioning and support.

Mad can contribute a defined package alongside your existing designers, or carry an agreed scope through design, engineering, fabrication and integration. Responsibilities and approvals are established with the project team.
