Split Flap Boards, Anyone?

Split Flap Boards, Anyone?

A split-flap display has a distinctive rhythm and visual character. A client wanted that appearance in a project, and Mad developed a digital version using QuickSilver® and a solid-state display.

The client is unnamed in this archived account. The recorded design response was a digital rendition of the flipping characters, giving the project another way to evoke the familiar departure-board effect.

Digital Split Flap Displays

The display uses animation on a standard digital screen, with the characteristic sound effect where specified. It has no physical letter flaps. Its display hardware, computer, software and content still need normal operation and support.

The implementation and the options

A useful design conversation starts with what the display should communicate, its physical setting and how staff will update it. Personalization can then be considered where it helps that purpose.
